I am trying to break in my savage, but I can't get the pull starter to work properly all the time. It seems like it doesn't want to hold on when I pull. The piston is at the top when I have problems with it. Is this normal for savage break in? Also, when I get it started, I have to keep revving the engine and reattaching the glow ignitor. I'm thinking its just a bad plug. Any help is appreciated.

ya replace the plug, and make sure all of your lines are connected the right way, and maybe ur cooling head is loose.... is it that its not geting enough compresion when you pull on it?

I replaced the plug, the lines are where they should be, and the cooling head is tight. The problem is the pull starter doesn't want to hold onto the shaft all the time. I haven't changed any of the stock settings. I'm going to take the pullstart off and see if it turns fine by itself.

IS THERE A ONE-WAY BEARING ON THAT ENGINE?

I'm not exactly sure what I did, but I got the pull starter to work better. I took it off and it's different than the one for a 3.3. When I took it off the long piece of metal came uncoiled. After about 30 minutes of getting that coiled back and the pull cord back in place, I put it back on and it works better. Also when I was first building the kit, I forgot to put one of the bearings on the clutch bell, so that probably would have caused a problem while driving.

Make the smallest coil you can, pull the starter away making the coil smaller, and keep doing that until it is small enough. Then use needle nose pliers to hold the coil together and wrap the cord around the spool. Put it all back together and it should work like it did.
